EMBODIMENT OF A HYPER CONTEXT

Ever since the Academy of Fine arts was established in the 17th century it was a place where interdisciplinary research could blossom. It was a place that both perpetuated and gave discipline to the ability of imagination. As one research unit confronting the overarching semester theme, Architecture of Learning - Learning Architectures, our studio will explore the educational landscape of the academy, designing within the hyper context of a centuries – old institution, the history of its building, its institutes, its protagonists and their teaching ideologies.

Lidar scan workshop

The studio under the supervision of Univ. Prof Kathrin Aste led two days of LIDAR Scanning workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dissected the building with the laser scanning technology. Produced a highly detailed point cloud of the building.

My project, Digital Mnemonics operates in the space of Aula of the Academy. The ceiling painting of the Aula, tells mythological stories which all display the characteristics of that historical place. My main interest to work with was the GAIA painting by Anselm Feuerbach.

Gaia, is the personification of the Earth and one of the Greek primordial deities. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess. Similar to Gaia, Aula is the birth giving space of the Academy of Fine arts in Vienna as the school was one of the main hosts in the city during the refugee movement in 2014

The project introduces a copy of the ceiling of Aula. This new structure, located in the inner yard of the university preserves the original frame made by Theophil Hansen. A new series of functions are instered inside this new structure which is in constant interaction with the Aula. This suspended membrane ceiling structure detects the memories of the Aula , and converts this data into a matter that changes the appearance of the membrane structure. A concept for Cloud Data converted into a physical space.
